Debut

Girls' Generation were initially known as "Super Girls", a fan made name, before their debut.
Touted as the female Super Junior by SM Entertainment, the group was announced to include members with diverse talents able to speak in different languages such as English, Chinese, and Japanese fluently for future expansion in different markets.

Initially 11 members were in the group.
However, 2 members withdrew; one of them being So Yeon who is now in T-ara and the other is Chanmi who is now in Coed School.

The members were unveiled individually from July 7, 2007 to the 14th.

On July 27, 2007 a documentary aired on "M.net" titled Girls' Generation Goes To School, which showed behind the scenes footage of the group, including the preparation of their unofficial debut performance at "School of Rock".

The group's first single was physically released soon after, including an instrumental of the group's debut song and two other tracks; "Beginning" and "Perfect for You".
The latter's Korean title is "Wish" (소원, SoWon), which later became the name of Girls' Generation's official fan-club (stylized: S♡NE).

On October 8, 2008, Girls' Generation's Factory Girl, a reality show featuring Girls' Generation as fashion magazine Elle Girl editors, was broadcast on M.net until it's last episode on December 17, 2008.

Girls' Generation's Factory Girl (Hangul: 소녀시대의 팩토리 걸) is a 2008 reality television show starring popular South Korean girl group Girls' Generation.
The show revolves around the members of the group working as intern editors at Elle Girl Korea.
The girls had to complete various challenges enacted by the "Elle Girl Korea" staff.

During promotional activities for Baby Baby, Girls' Generation started individual solo activities.
Taeyeon began hosting as a disc jockey with Super Junior's Kang In, Yoona was cast as the lead actress in the drama Neoneun Nae Unmyeong, and besides endorsing products and lending their vocals to drama soundtracks, the group remained in indefinite hiatus for nine months.

On December 26, 2008, posters of the Girls' Generation members wearing roller-skates were posted up in various locations around Seoul.
However on December 26, 2009 posters of each Girls' Generation member were erected all over Seoul.
SM Entertainment's phone-lines were blocked up by callers asking whether the posters were for sale and the company asked fans to stop taking the posters down for personal use.
Three days later on December 29, the group's management stated that the posters were indeed teaser posters and that the group would soon release their first EP, The First Mini Album – Gee the following month in January 2009.

On January 2, 2009, SM Entertainment revealed an MV teaser for "Gee", the title track to their debut mini-album Gee.
A certain part of the choreography for "Gee" called the "Crab Leg Dance" by fans became immensely popular amongst the public.

"Gee" is a fast-tempo song about a girl who has fallen in love for the first time.
The title is supposed to be an exclamation of surprise, similar to "어머나!" (Eomeona!, similar in meaning to "Oh, my goodness!", or, more similarly, "Gee!" in English).

Gee

SM Entertainment released an official MV for "Himnae! (Way To Go)" on March 5, 2009.

Himnae! (Way To Go) (힘 내!)

Dear. Mom

Destiny

Let's Talk About LOVE (힘들어하는 연인들을 위해)

The title track, "Gee", is composed by E-TRIBE. "Dear. Mom" was composed by Kim Tae Sung, while the lyrics were composed by his girlfriend Ivy, though she used the penname "The Lighthouse" in the album credits.
The song "Way to Go!" is a new full version of Girls' Generation and Dong Bang Shin Ki CF digital single, "Haptic Motion".

After a short break, SM Entertainment announced that the group would be back with a new mini-album sporting a "Marine Girl" concept.

The last episode of Girls' Generation's Horror Movie Factory also ended on June 14th due to low ratings.

The new single was to be titled Tell Me Your Wish (Genie) (소원을 말해봐 (Genie), literally "Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)"); with the full mini album being released digitally on June 22, 2009.

Individual photo's of Girls' Generation's come back, called the "Marine Girl" concept, were released on June 18, 2009 while the music video teaser for "Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie)" was released on June 19, 2009.

The preview for their new reality show Girls' Generation's Hello Baby, set to air on June 23, 2009, was also released on June 19th.

Girls' Generation's Hello Baby (소녀시대의 헬로 베이비) was a reality television show broadcasted on the cable channel KBS joy and starring Girls' Generation.
To experience motherhood, Girls' Generation were assigned to be mothers and take care of a 9 month old baby boy named "Cho Kyung San".
Periodically a different male guest would be the father, and they would select the "Best Mom" or "Worst Mom" of that particular day.
The show was aired Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday after noons, and had an overall Nielsen rating of 1.1%.

The mini-album cover for Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie) was released on June 21, 2009. Soon after it's release, controversy erupted over the mini-album cover due to the plane that was said to be a direct replica of Japan’s A6M Zero fighter planes, which was operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service in World War 2, and the use of an eagle emblem on Girls' Generation's hats that resembled hats worn by the Nazi's.

SM Entertainment stated about the controversy "The album cover for Girls' Generation had been designed based on the marine girl concept, there’s no hidden meaning to it at all."

SM Entertainmet stated "We used military icons on album cover, however it was interpreted and understood in a way we didn’t expected. So we are planning to delete the part and put an icon of South Korean supersonic jet T-50".
The physical release of Genie was delayed by SM Entertainment in order to redo the album art, and was released 4 days later on June 29, 2009.
